It seems like a misconception, in Congress 60’s opinion, that the causes of drug addiction should be known first before one can properly treat the condition, or help someone who is using drugs

o illustrate, with all due respect, the 12 step program believes that “addiction exists,” and that it can exist in a vacuum, all by itself, for no reason at all.  For example, consider an ideal child grown up in an ideal environment with definitely no family history of addiction, and guess what?  That child can change into a compulsive user, either alcoholic or drug addict.  Indeed, this can happen, and the situation cannot be justified like “well, of course the kid got messed up, because this or that happened, or whatever.”  Sometimes, addiction just happens.  It cannot be predicted, nor controlled.  Believe it or not, this is the reality.

Given, since it is realized that addiction might happen without any cause, it paves the way for the idea that the treatment for addiction is universal, regardless of various causes it might have. The old method’s concept follows like this: if we could identify the causes which we believe led to the addiction, then treating those causes might automatically lead to fix addiction.

But history has demonstrated such model to be lacking, and it did not work. Principle reasons were addressed, and addictions still remained.

That being so, thorough understanding of addiction tells us that the question is not “what caused the addiction” so that we can then go fix those causes; the real questions are “what is addiction?”, and “what does addiction cause?”

Congress 60 advises us to know “what is addiction”, “who is an addict”, and “what is the destruction”. The effect which years of drug addiction can have on a person changes and alters the individual in a profound way. Congress 60 categorizes these destruction in 3 groups: Body, Psyche, and Worldview.

The personality and psyche are altered due to the fact that the person uses drugs to come along with life, and he does it over and over again, every single day. The fact is “addiction” causes this change in psyche and personality, and not vice verse. As a result, an addict becomes isolated gradually.

Congress 60 believes that the solution is simple, and treating addiction has been this difficult so far just because of the fact that the starting point was not clear.  Once we could restore the system in the body which produces and controls bio-chemicals, and put it into proper functioning, we can simultaneously treat body and psyche problems. As a matter of fact, this method of treatment calls for proper time (11 months on average), proper medicine (which can satisfy the needs of the body), and proper alternation of one’s worldview.

One can overcome addiction and find recovery when he can start to get education, grow, and lean toward more productive choices in his life.  When an individual pushes himself to improve his overall health in numerous areas of his life, this strengthens his recovery.

Moreover, another requisite for recovery is setting goals and meeting them, and consequently, creating own self esteem through merit.  The fact here is that seeking causes of addiction is useless, for an addict is going to be a whole new person living a new life. What each members of Congress 60 are doing is like building a new life! When one constantly upgrades his knowledge on addiction, his self, life, rules of the game, worldview, and utilizes his knowledge in everyday life, his recovery will get better and better.
